Az angoloknál kialakult egy sajátos étkezési rend, mely a fogalommá vált „angol reggelivel” indul. Gyümölcslével kezdenek, melyet a zabkása követ – vagy inkább követett. Napjainkban már inkább a divatosabb és talán egészségesebb müzlit választják. Majd a pirítós következik, melyet vajjal, mézzel, dzsemmel kennek meg, ki-ki a maga ízlése szerint. Világszerte ismert reggelijük a sültsonka tojással, illetve a húsos sültszalonna tojással. Reggeli után jön az elmaradhatatlan fekete tea, melyet tejszínnel, tejjel vagy önmagában, de semmiképpen sem cukorral fogyasztanak. A hal- és rákételek mellett birkát, baromfi- és marhahúst fogyasztanak leggyakrabban. A marhahúsnak számos elkészítési módját ismerik. Az italok közül a legkedveltebbek a whisky, a gin és a vodka. Mivel Angliában nem terem meg a szőlő, kénytelenek a bort importálni, melyek közül a francia és a német borokat, ezen belül a vörösborokat részesítik előnyben. Az angolok nagy sörivók, de a hazai sörökkel szemben inkább az importsört kedvelik. After two years of planning, five sightseeing flights of London onboard a Zeppelin airship will take off every day from July 10. The flights will take off from east London and climb to 2,000 ft above the Thames. Newborns who have bulked up by 4 months of age are twice as likely to tip the scales 20 years later when compared to babies who gain weight more slowly. It is too early to tell if a chubby infancy represents the start of a growing problem. But given the clear-cut advantages of preventing obesity rather than fighting it later, good habits are best instilled early on. This could be a critical time in the development of obesity. Gaining weight rapidly at such a young age is associated with permanent changes that may make it harder to regulate appetite and energy balance. Stettler’s team followed several hundred African American children who were born in Philadelphia around 1960. Obesity rates continue to soar for every age group and race, but the risks of heart disease and other obesity-related problems are particularly hard felt by minorities, especially African Americans. Stettler took a fresh set of measurements and then compared them to what the study participants weighed in the past. The now grown-up participants were considered obese if they had a body mass index of 30 or greater, plus a substantial amount of body fat. Body mass index is a measure of weight that takes height into consideration. Infants who gained more than eight to 10 pounds in the first four months of life doubled their chance for being obese by the time they turned 20 years of age. In an editorial that accompanied the paper, Dr. Jack Yanovski argues that the small study size makes it hard to draw firm conclusions. When Stettler's team included stout 7 year olds in their analysis, for example, infant weight gain did not appear to be a significant cause of adult obesity. But the results may ultimately help us to identify children at unusual risk of adult obesity. The participants in the study mostly grew up on baby formula, which has been linked to faster weight gain compared with infants who are breast fed. Last week the traffic-clogged metropolis began demanding a Ł5 ($8) congestion charge from all daytime motorists entering the busiest areas of the city. The result: a drop of nearly 25 percent in traffic. The decongestant scheme employs some 700 cameras. Any driver who enters the zone – a patch of around eight square miles – between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. has until 10 p.m. that same day to pay the charge. The cameras check the registration plate of every car against the payment records, and failure to cough up the cash lands one an Ł80 fine. The extra revenue from the charge and fines, estimated at up to Ł150 million a year, will go toward the improvement of public transport. The idea is catching on. In Britain alone, at least 30 other towns and cities are contemplating the tactic. Similar setups are already in operation in Singapore and Norway. Josephine Garis Cochran was the first person to build a practical dishwashing machine, succeeding where some had tried and failed. Josephine Garis married a wealthy merchant and politician named William Cochran. When she was 44, Josephine Cochran found that her fine china tableware was chipping. It'd been in the family since the 17th century, and the servants were being careless with it. So she took to washing her own dishes. And it was the chore of washing dishes by hand and trying to save her good china from breaking that caused her to proceed with an idea to invent a unique machine. She also wanted to relieve tired housewives of the drudgery of dish washing. She sat down with a cup in her hand, thinking. She measured the dishes first, then made wire compartments, each designed to fit plates, cups or saucers. The cleaning trick would be to rain down water on them. After her husband’s death Josephine was left with a mere fifteen hundred dollars and much more than that in debts. At that moment, everything changed. Josephine Cochran became the developer and champion of a wholly new business. She started out in a shed behind her house. Four years later, she was advertising the Garis-Cochran Dish-Washing Machine Company in periodicals. Cochran showed the dishwasher at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, but only restaurants and hotels showed interest in it. After she died, the company changed hands and names until in 1940 it became the Kitchen Aid part of the Whirlpool Corporation, but it wasn't until many years after her death that the machine captured the attention of the average housewife.
