February 2015 c Basement –Howick Bridge Club, Pakuranga Rd, Pakuranga, Auckland. www.howickcameraclub.org.nz Meetings are 1st, 3rd and 4th Mondays at 7.45pm Est. 1956 Welcome back to another year of photography fun and challenges. Personally, I have found our first subject of the year quite a challenge. Something I thought would be simple – isn’t, but that’s what the club is about, not only for enjoyment but to stretch ourselves to improve our photography. Congratulations to those who have moved up a grade. See these on p5 as well as all the end of year prizes and trophies. We would love to see many more entries in the C and B Grades this year, so please don’t be shy .Any of the A graders and judges would be very happy to help if you wish. Our first field trip will be great fun and a good way for members to socialise as well. See below for details On the second to last page of every newsletter, is the information for entering competitions such as size of image, and who to send them to. There is one address for our regular monthly comps and another for special Club comps. If you are unsure please check or ask for clarification so your images don’t go astray and not get entered in time. I hope you all managed to get a break of some kind over the festive season and if not, then maybe you are looking forward to a holiday fairly soon - especially when the kids go back to school and all those parents out there can breathe a sigh of relief - even if it is in the car, stuck in traffic on your way back to work, oh well. At least you have your camera, right? And you have been doing lots of interesting trips and things to inspire you over the break? Time spent with family and friends over Xmas and New Year is a good chance to capture some unforgettable moments, whether good or bad! Talking of inspiration, I was chatting to a friend of mine who is a very good artist and like most artists, reasonably critical of her work. She belongs to her local art group and was lamenting the fact that she felt uninspired with the group and was thinking of leaving. "What will you do?" I asked her. She shrugged and said; 'I don’t know I just need someone or something to inspire me." I then asked her why didn't she take her own inspiration and turn it around to bounce ideas off the group rather than just leave which would be a shame as she has a lot to offer. There might be some people in the group who are waiting for that kind of opening, who are afraid others, that appear to be stick in the mud types, might laugh off their ideas. Too bad; what if they work? Sometimes you just have to stick with something and give it a shake up just to see what falls out. What about joining the committee to have a say? Or if you are not into committees, have a say anyway. There are no stupid questions or suggestions, just good ideas in disguise, waiting for their chance to shine (unless the plan is to set fire to something!) With that in mind, please give a thought to our AGM in March when the new committee is elected. Consider giving it a go, it's fun and feisty and the workload is evenly shared. We need more people with fresh ideas to keep the club the place to come for all things photographic. The GX1 is a mirrorless MFT (Micro Four Thirds) CSC (Compact System Camera). I edit my photos using Adobe Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 5.7 and other plugins such as Nik Filters. If money wasn't problem I don't think my photography gear would change much. A Full Frame camera might be nice but a hassle to carry around, an MFT camera is comparatively tiny and easy to take with you. I have a small, comfortable bag which is high quality and I don't feel I would need to replace it. Any lenses I want, I have access to, so nothing would change there. The only thing I can think of is upgrading to Photoshop CC. My Dad has always been interested in photography and film so from a young age I've been round cameras, Photoshop and video production. I started taking photos around the age of eight, at the age of ten I started using Photoshop Elements and took a course on it. After that I have been working with Photoshop, Illustrator and similar programs very often. In the middle of 2013 I got my GX1, my first CSC, and began using Lightroom I joined the Howick Camera Club in March last year. I most prefer taking pictures of animals as they are often unaware that you are taking pictures of them, and even if they do they don't care or put their hand in front of their face. Animals also don't pose, at least not most of them, so they always have a natural feel about them. They are also animate objects which are alive, and convey emotion and movement. Humans do to but I find it less comfortable taking pictures of most of them. One of my favourite images, because I can't have only one, is my picture of a Pied Shag on the Whitford Estuary. I like this image because I think it's a good head shot of the bird showing the detail of beak and feathers. Also the background is yellow (my blurred kayak behind it) which by chance is the same colour as the spot beside the shag's eye.
