The Middletown Arts Center’s Summer Arts Camp offers creative activities all summer long in our beautiful, air conditioned facility with our caring and talented staff. Children can explore the arts in affordable morning and afternoon sessions that can be joined together to create a full day experience. Campers who enroll in a morning and afternoon camp bring their lunch and a supervised lunch period is included. All camps include a one-half hour period of drop-off and pick-up time at no extra charge. BEFORE AND AFTER CARE available starting at 7:00 am and ending at 6:00 pm for $7.00 per hour. After care provided by Club MAC! About Us The mission of the Middletown Township Cultural and Arts Council, Inc. Each week is different and will include age-appropriate activities relating to the themes below - children will draw, paint, construct, and create. Each week will include a variety of materials including watercolor, acrylic paint, different kinds of clay, pastels, pencils, and craft materials. Children bring their own snack. *Activities will vary between morning and afternoon for campers who wish to remain in the art program full day. Art Adventures Peace, Love and ART! June 16–20 and June 23–27 July 28–August 1 Get a jump on summer with this fun camp that will explore different types of art! From colorful collage to awesome landscapes, there’s something for all! A week full of amazing art projects! Make a poster, paint peace signs, and craft with a groovy theme. Surfin’ Dudes and Mermaids Returns! Red, White and Blue! August 4–8 June 30–July 3 (CLOSED July 4th) Back by popular demand, this island week will include new projects of surf board creations, iridescent mermaids, palm trees, tiki art, and lots of creative fun. Celebrate the 4th of July as only Miss Laurie can with a red, white, and blue bonanza! Create flags, fireworks, stars, stripes, and use lots of glitz and glitter! *Pro-rated 4-day camp Members $80 Non-members $92 Beach Bash July 7–11 Jump into an ocean full of underwater fun! Sandy beaches, sparkling waves, colorful fish, and beautiful seashells await you in this week with lots of great art activity. Animals, Animals, Animals July 14–18 Big and small, spotted and striped, we love them all! Creative fun with animal prints, jungle creations and colorful habitats. Over the Rainbow July 21–25 ARTS & CRAFTS ARTS ADVENTURES WITH MISS LAURIE Garden Delights and Buggy Nights August 11–15 A magical art adventure exploring the garden. Glow-in-the-dark fire flies, colorful patterned frogs, and iridescent fairy wings are just the beginning. Rain Forest Adventure August 18–22 From parrots and macaws to lizards and snakes, this week’s art is all about the beauty of the rain forest! Wacky, Wonderful, Whatever! August 25–29 Enjoy the last week of camp as we create masterpieces celebrating all that is summer. Make magnificent art based on the colors of the rainbow. July 7–11 Enjoy creating adorable “Pet Portraitures,” using lots of different materials and techniques. August 4–8 Painted Pillowcases & Accessories Make realistic cupcakes, cookies and slices of birthday cake. Finish your creations with acrylic paint and glossy finish so they are ready to display. July 14–18 Shimmering Watercolors Bring your own pillowcase, hat or canvas sneakers (white or light colors recommended) to create a custom, trendy look with fabric paint. Washer and dryer friendly. August 11–15 Using high-quality materials such as shimmer watercolor, students will sketch and paint beautiful watercolor scenes. Summer Splash One by Land, Two by Sea July 21–25 August 18–22 Sail away this week as we create amazing summer-themed art using a wide variety of paint, papers, salt, plastic wrap, and wax! Create 3-D Beach art with found materials. Create amazing art with rocks, sea glass, driftwood, and more. Materials provided. Needlepoint Placemats Acrylic Painting on Canvas July 28–August 1 August 25–29 Create unique placemats using basic stitches, plastic canvas, and colorful yarn. Create a beautiful canvas painting that will be ready for framing. DOODLE DAWN EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM Ages 2-6 Members $100 Non-members $115 Puppet Play Jump and Jingle June 16–20 (9:00-11:45 am) July 28–August 1 (9:00-11:45 am) Let’s have fun with everything from shadow puppets to sock puppets. We will create a puppet theater and make our own puppet show. Dance with musical instruments and sing all your favorite songs. Make drums, shakers and lots of crafts. Down On The Farm Everything Under The Sun August 4–8 (12:15-2:45 pm) July 14-18 (12:15-2:45 pm) Let’s head to the farm and create the cutest critters! Old McDonald would be proud. Sing, create with clay, and join in story time. Beach blanket story time and lots of pretend as we explore beach fun. We”ll make beautiful fish, octopus and seashell crafts and paint dolphins. Build a model waterslide park, paint a killer whale, draw an underwater fish café, and design a futuristic underwater vehicle! Campers will experiment with water and salt to create beautiful art! Create your own individualized cherished doll keepsake. Outfit your creation with a jumper, skirt, fashion accessories and a toy which you create using a pattern and simple hand sewing techniques. ELENA VARGETTO CAMP The Art of Beauty with Elena Vargetto Ages 10 and older July 7–11 (12:30-2:30 pm) Members $150 Non-members $165 Learn the tricks of the beauty trade from licensed cosmetologist and certified make-up artist Elena Vargetto. Students will learn skincare, tasteful makeup application, and learn the colors that are best for their skin tones. Miss Elena will cover hair care and different easyto-create style options. Tips for the perfect manicure and fashion will also be discussed. On Friday, students will display what they learned with a mini fashion show! Girls will get a special makeup kit. DOODLEPALOOZA! 6 Don’t miss this summer’s most awesome event! Learn to perform show-stopping numbers and discover what it takes to put together the type of performances you see each week on shows like “Glee”! There will be dancing, acting and singing all wrapped up in a fun packed week. Students will engage in theatrical curricular studies focusing on creating a character, stage presence, script analysis, dance and performance skills, while learning techniques of auditioning for stage performance. *The youth drama program will meet once a week for 15 weeks, starting on July 2nd and culminating with a Fall Festival performance showcase of the Children’s Theatre production. This workshop encourages students to explore new dance styles and movement concepts in basic jazz, ballet, tap, and lyrical styles. Each style is incorporated with exercises that stimulate the imagination and developmental creativity. Themed Weeks: One Direction Music Camp Ages 5-8 June 23–27 August 11–15 Members $150 Non-Members $175 This fun camp will encourage aspiring performers to sing, dance and harmonize enthusiastically to one amazing band and more!! Girl Power camp culminates with a Friday mini-performance. 10 Pirates, Lassies and Sponge Bob By the Sea Camp Ages 3-7 July 14–18 August 25–29 Members $150 Non-Members $175 Jump into this wonderful wet and wild camp exploring Pirates, Lassies, the wonderful silly world of Sponge Bob, and the great ocean blue! We’ll dive into a treasure trove of pirate songs, explore bubbles, paint shells, discover sea treasures, learn about sharks, whales, turtles, and jellyfish. Through imaginative play, stories, puppets, and movement, kids will discover a fantastic underwater world. Grab your pirate hat and take the plunge! Junk Yard Jammers Ages 7-10 July 21–25 Members $150 Non-Members $175 Jammers make, shake, strum, and drum the day away reusing old stuff from home, making unique one-of-a-kind percussion instruments. Kids will even take an old song and re-write it into a new hit tune!! Kids learn about going green through re-cycling, re-using and re-thinking about junk, re-vitalizing it into NEW cool usable items. Jumping, dancing, drumming, and singing are just a few activities jammers will experience at this totally groovy camp. Boy Power Music Camp Ages 4-7 July 28–August 1 Members $150 Non-Members $175 Skip, jump, swirl, twirl, or stomp your feet to music with Miss Sherri and friends. Be amazed at the energy, enthusiasm, and confidence we promote in your children as we equip them with the skills to be creative and give them the tools to become peace builders. MUSIC Stompin’, Boppin’ Rockin’ Kids Top of the Charts Music Camp August 4–8 (Ages 6-8) September 1–5 (Ages 8-11) Members $150 Non-Members $175 This cool camp teaches kids some of the hottest hits by their favorite artists such as Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Adele and Pink. Campers will sing on a microphone, learn simple cool moves, and have a Blast! Campers make a daily craft. NJSYO CAMP NJSYO Introduction to Orchestra for Strings Children entering 4th-8th Grades July 28–August 1 (9:30 am-12:00 pm) Members $135 Non-Members $150 Introduce children to the thrill of playing in an orchestra ensemble while refining their musical skills! Under the direction of New Jersey State Youth Orchestra conductor Katie Gussman, your child will learn to play music in groups, follow a conductor’s lead, and understand concert etiquette (both while playing and while listening to others play). Children will be given time to socialize with other children who are interested in classical music. The week will end with a short performance for parents. Students must (1) supply their own instruments and (2) have finished at least 1 year of instruction while completing Book 1 of a method series. 11 COMPUTER DESIGN & MORE 12 BLACK ROCKET PRODUCTION CAMPS Members $165 Non-Members $175 * No prior experience is needed. At the end of each camp, students will be able to access their work on a password protected website to share with friends and family! All Black Rocket Production classes are designed to mirror real life experiences and the collaborative nature of the creative process. Students will work in pair or teams for most of the program. DROIDS and BOTS LEGO® Video Games Ages 8-13 June 30–July 3 (9:00 am-12:00 pm) *4 days Members $132 Non-member $140 Ages 8-13 July 14–18 (9:00 am-12:00 pm) From R2-D2 to the Roomba. In this cutting edge class you will learn the basics of task robotics including the assembly process, principles of gears, mechanics, sensors, and sound activation. Each day will bring a different concept and a new challenge as you build a variety of different task oriented robots with a partner. Combine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and Video Games! Students will create your own LEGO universe, characters, and adventures in an interactive 2-D Video Game. At the end of the program, students will have a finished Lego Video Game. Games are only compatible with PCs - Mac versions can be created for an additional fee. LEGO® YOUniverse! Junkyard Inventors Ages 8-13 June 30–July 3 (1:00-4:00 pm) *4 days Members $132 Non-member $140 Students will use common, everyday items to design motorized mechanisms and micro machines. The program is divided into a series of challenges where students will compete to accomplish specific tasks and goals. Each challenge combines environmental principles, physics, elements of design, and engineering. Inspired by MIT, the class culminates with demo day to share your inventions! Students will need to bring common household items to class for certain projects. LEGO® Films & Stop Animation! July 7–11 Ages 8-12: 9:00 am-12:00 pm OR Ages 11-14: 1:00-4:00 pm Make your LEGOs come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or LEGOs and create a short film with your friends. Whether you want to recreate a scene from Star Wars or design a world of your own, this class brings your dreams to the screen. Student created films are available on a password protected website to share with family and friends. Ages 8-13 July 14–18 (1:00-4:00 pm) In this LEGO adventure, YOU are the star! Pick your favorite LEGO genre or create an alternative universe to create a digital illustrated story. Whether you want to fight alongside Batman, be part of a Ninijago clan, swashbuckle with pirates, or go into space with Bionicle, the only requirement is that you put yourself in the story! All students will end the class with a digital comic book. Digital Storytellers Ages 8-13 July 21–25 (9:00 am-12:00 pm) From the Hunger Games to Huckleberry Finn, humans have always been storytellers. Whether you like to write, draw, or want to do it all, students in this class will create digital stories about a topic they choose. Rewrite the ending to Star Wars, create an alternate universe, or write a story about the town you live in. Whether you want to move past the basic techniques learned in App Attack or want to jump right in, we are ready for you! All students will create a mobile game app and explore more in depth programming concepts. MINECRAFT Designers August 11–15 Ages 11-14: 9:00 am-12:00 pm Ages 8-12: 1:00-4:00 pm If you love the game of MINECRAFT, but always wanted to design your own characters and buildings for your games, this class is for you! Learn the basics of creating 3D modeling using a new industry grade software to design your very own characters and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. Students must have Minecraft at home to import characters. App Attack! Make Your 1st Game App Ages 11-14 July 28–August 1 (1:00-4:00 pm) Explore the App universe and create your own mobile application or mobile game! Students will explore the world of phonebased and tablet applications. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and games, you will also see firsthand how the world of App’s publishing functions. *No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smart phone or tablet to take the class. Video Game Odyssey Ages 8-11 August 18–22 (9:00 am-12:00 pm) Unlock the keys to game design by choosing your own adventure! Unlike any other Black Rocket game design course, students in this program will make special top-down adventure games like Pokemon or Zelda to compete with their friends. Design unlimited rooms and levels as you continue your quest in becoming a game design master. Video Game Animation Code Breakers! Ages 11-14 August 4–8 (9:00 am-12:00 pm) Calling all future coders, programmers, and designers! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the 15-year-old high school student who just made 1 million dollars for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Make Your First 3-D Video Game! Ages 8-11 August 4–8 (1:00-4:00 pm) By popular demand, we are offering a 3-D game design class. This experience allows Ages 11-14 August 18–22 (1:00-4:00 pm) Take your game design to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites. Start with a name, develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a story line. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in future games. Students do not need any prior experience in game design, animation, or sketching. Student created animations will be available on a password protected website to share with friends and family. Campers will learn about real-life space exploration and build models related to the NASA space program. In addition, the day includes LEGO Star Wars themed models, group games, challenges and more. Put your Chima skills to the test throughout this camp by racing Speedorz and building motorized models with LEGO bricks. Does your tribe have what it takes to become the ultimate master of CHI? Your destiny awaits! Model Designer Camp July 14–18 How do LEGO brick model-designers come up with their ideas? How do the ideas go from concept to completion? Come explore the creative process of model design. Campers will learn the function of different LEGO components and discover how those components can work together to create all kinds of solid structures and moving parts. Each child will have the opportunity to present his or her own design. Amazing Animals Camp July 28–August 1 Learn fascinating facts about the animal kingdom the Bricks 4 Kidz way. Each day we will explore interesting and amazing animals of all kind - funny looking, creepy, adorable, big and small, slow and fast. Each day we’ll focus on a “creature of the day” and then build a colorful model using LEGO bricks - some will even move! Bricks 4 Girlz Camp August 11–15 Grab your girlfriends and join us for a girls-only week of crafting and creating with LEGO bricks. Get to know LEGO bricks’ newest line of girl-themed models. Build adorable houses, cafés, and beach scenes inspired by LEGO Friends . We do lots of other cool things with bricks—from jewelry making to brick art. And don’t worry - there are “no boys allowed”. Sports Spectacular Camp August 18–22 Calling all sport fans… on your mark, get set, build! Celebrate the summer with cool models of sports from cycling to soccer, basketball to gymnastics. Take a break from the heat and compete indoors to set your own sports records with our exciting sportsthemed challenges. SMALL FACTORY AT THE MAC Create-A-Cartoon! Ages 5-10 DATE AND FEE TBA Create-A-Cartoon is an amazing way to let your child’s imagination soar while introducing them to creative writing, art, music, and acting. Young producers work together to dream up an original story that will be turned into a 2-3 minute mini-cartoon movie. Students journey through the production process while developing characters, backgrounds, props, scripts, and music. The class concludes with a red carpet premiere of their cartoon! MAC Grows Young Gardeners Ages 5-10 Week 1: July 21–25 (9:30-11:30 am) Week 2 : July 28–August 1 (9:30-11:30 am) Week 3: August 4–8 (9:30-11:30 am) The garden is a magical place to learn and grow. Learn about local seasonal vegetables, herbs, and fruits including where things grow, how things grow, and how we can enjoy them. Explore the joy and wonder of planning, planting, and taking care of a small garden through fun, age-appropriate hands on activities. Activities vary daily: arts and crafts, gardening, problem solving, taste testing, “uncooking” simple recipes. Water, a hat, and light gardening gloves are recommended for this very special week. “Uncooking” For Kids Ages 8-12 July 21–25 (12:30-3:00 pm) Kids who prepare their own food are more likely to eat it. Learn basic kitchen techniques and how to creatively add fruits, vegetables, greens, and grains to your plate in a comfortable age-appropriate setting. Practice making great “uncooked” recipes and enjoy tasting them, too. Recipes and activities vary daily. Taste testing will be included. A Delicious Rainbow Ages 4-10 July 28–August 1 (12:30-3:00 pm) You are what you eat… so why not be as colorful as you can be? Everyone loves color, so let’s bring more of it into our diets. Learn about fresh produce of a different color, try samples and explore how food helps us grow up healthfully. Activities are designed to stimulate the imagination and develop creative ways of bringing more healthy unprocessed foods into our diet. Taste testing will be included. Learn about basic body systems through fun arts & crafts and physical activities. Experience your “Five Senses” though age-appropriate sensory activities. Practice creative, fun movement from various cultures and learn about healthy habits. Health and happiness are about eating good food, practicing good habits, thinking good thoughts, and surrounding yourself with good people. (During “Five Senses” activities, taste testing of “the six tastes” may be included.) All sessions will include a brief age-appropriate guided meditation.
