S.B.R.L’s Most Wanted!

Have you seen these three ladies? I bet your children have. They are wanted. They are wanted by local parents and children for several reasons. They are wanted because they provide vital educational and recreational activities during our annual library summer reading programs. These programs are vital because they enable children to maintain their reading skills during the summer break from school. Parents know the library programs serve another purpose in giving their often bored kids something fun and exciting to do. As for the kids themselves, all they know or care about is that the programs are fun and are full of songs, crafts, and games! These ladies are responsible for the programs. We have evidence against them. When the families leave their programs, the kids are smiling and laughing and are proudly holding newly created craft items. The trio are armed… with experience in entertaining and educating children. They are crafty and know exactly how to make children feel welcome and safe at the library. This kind of influence could turn these children into readers and library users! If you see this group, do NOT try to stop them. They are performing valuable work that benefits the whole community! Should you encounter them, there is a reward. The reward takes the form of the pleasure you and your kids will gain from spending time with the trio.

Sugar Grove Yearbooks @ Marion! The Marion Library’s SWVA Heritage Room now contains several yearbooks from the Sugar Grove School. Come by and enjoy your own “class reunion” by flipping through those glossy pages full of memories of yesterday! It’s like being back in high school without study hall, wind sprints, or pop quizzes! 1965 1970-1971 1978-1984 1986-1994 1996-1999 2003-2007 2011-2013 If you own an extra yearbook from a local school, consider donating it to our SWVA Heritage Room so our collection can be comprehensive! We’ll give you an “A” for effort!
The Young Adult collection including the graphic novel section is now located downstairs. Stop by and checkout some great books!

Paws for Reading at the Chilhowie Public Library!
It’s easy to be a part of our Summer Reading Program. Just register, pick up a reading log, and start reading! Read (or be read to) for 10 hours, track it on your reading log, and get a free paperback book! Stop by the library June 1-14 to register. Reading logs are due by July 19 .

Come to the Library and use the free Ancestry.com Library edition! The Library edition does not have all the personalized functionality of the personal subscriptions, but you get it for free here! Ancestry Library edition offers access to more than 7,000 databases which include vital records, censuses, immigration records, family histories, military records, court and legal documents, directories, photos, maps, and a lot more! FAMILYSEARCH.ORG:
Familysearch is the largest genealogy organization in the world and it is all free! The collection includes billions of marriage, birth, death, census, land, and court records from over 130 countries. Patrons can search online and order microfilm to be delivered to the library. Familysearch’s collection includes over 2.4 million rolls of microfilm and 727,000 microfiche. Also available online are features that allow users to make a family tree, learn how to start their family search, and much, much, more. HERITAGEQUEST:
Heritage Quest provides online and microfilm availability of a large collection of material for both genealogical and historical researchers. The information provided dates back to the 1700s! The collection contains U.S. Federal Census records, more than 25,000 fully searchable family and local history books, selected Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files, and much more. Smyth County News is offered through Newsbank, issues available online cover June 21, 2007 to the present. Searches can be done by Date, Section, Headline, Author, etc. and can be sorted by three different options. EDUCATIONAL EBSCOHOST:
The Ebscohost ebook collection contains over 118,000 titles covering a broad range of academic subjects. Coverage includes Art, Business & Economics, Education, Literary Criticism, Medical, Performing arts, and many more. Ebooks can be viewed online with the ebook viewer or downloaded to your PC. They can also be downloaded to your iPad, iPhone, or android device. ESEQUELS:
eSequels is an online guide to series fiction. Searches can be done by Author, Book Title, Character, Location, Subject, or Keyword. So you if can remember a character’s name but not the author or series, search under character name. Want to know the reading order by a certain author, search under author name and you will get the books by that author in reading order! Also available is a “What’s New” area that gives forthcoming titles of popular series authors, articles about series fiction, updates and news about eSequels, and other related items. LITERATI PUBLIC:
E-book database website with 100’s of titles with several ways to search over 3,000,000 full text entries from encyclopedias and dictionaries. Every entry has citations available in multiple formats. Also contains embedded videos, tutorials, and homework help! .

FIND IT VIRGINIA: Find it Virginia is a collection of databases for all age ranges that cover newspapers, magazine & journal articles, books, and encyclopedias. Articles can be printed or emailed to patron email and even bookmarked. There are also additional resources that are specifically geared toward certain school grades. Information found on Find it Virginia also comes with citation information.
ENTERTAINMENT FREADING:
Freading is another database we offer where patrons can check out ebooks for use with a computer (PC or Mac), mobile device, or Kindle Fire. Freading offers ebooks that are fiction and nonfiction, as well as adult and juvenile titles. ONE CLICK DIGITAL:
One Click Digital is an audiobook database that can be used with PC or Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod, or android device, or Kindle Fire. OVERDRIVE:
Overdrive is an audiobook and ebook database. Our collection is a collaborative effort between 12 libraries in the region. Fiction and non-fiction are available as we as young adult and juvenile books. Overdrive accommodates PC or Mac and several mobile devices such as Kindles and Nooks. TUMBLEBOOKS:
Tumblebooks are ebooks for kids. Tumblebooks combine animation, sound, music, and pictures to get children interested in reading. Children can choose from Story Books, Read-alongs, Videos, Puzzles & Games, Language Learning, and Non-Fiction Books. ZINIO:
Read magazines on your computer! Also, you may read them on your iPhone, iPad, Android device, Kindle Fire, Blackberry, or Nook! With Zinio patrons can download and read numerous magazines from the comfort of home, office, or hammock for that matter! Zinio has current issues and new issues will be released at the same time as the print editions. Patrons can browse or search for titles and there are no limits on checkouts or length of time kept.

The Smyth-Bland Regional Library APP (SBRL MOBL), as provided by MozGo, brings an entire library catalogue to your IPhone, Ipod, Ipad, or android device. Patrons may now search the library catalogue, check their accounts, renew items, or place requests via their mobile devices. The SBRL MOBL APP may be downloaded from the APP Store or Android Market. If you are a fan of John Green’s popular book/film “The Fault in Our Stars”, you should stop by the Young Adult collection downstairs at Marion and try some of our newly arrived John Green books on CD. You have to hear what you’re missing! Tumble Book Cloud- Graphic Novels Online!
(Nancy Drew) We have received a free 3 month subscription to TumbleBookCloud, an online collection of over 1000 eBooks, chapter books, graphic novels, , National Geographic videos, and audio books. All books are available with unlimited access, all the time, from any device with an internet connection. Please note that, although many of the graphic novels on TumbleBookCloud are designated as All Ages, the website, and most of the graphic novels, are for middle school and high school students and may contain content not appropriate for elementary school students. S.B.R.L. American Red Cross Blood Drive
Smyth-Bland Regional Library’s Marion Branch will be the site of an American Red Cross Blood Drive on August 6, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.! This drive will be held in the Copenhaver Meeting Room. Overdue/late fees will be forgiven for anyone donating blood on August 6 only. Confirmation of blood donation must be brought to the Circulation Desk after donation.
