This prehardened steel has every requisite for all around good service in any application requiring wear resistance, toughness, high mechanical properties, and good machinability. In addition, the bars are stress-relieved before nal straightening. This ensures a minimum of residual stresses so that bars remain straight during machining.  ADVANTAGES  Heat treated and ready to use for maximum wear and toughness. Machines easily without warping - due to stress relief treatment. Machines to a smooth surface without grinding. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS  Brake Die steel may be used for all types of dies for the forming and bending of sheets, strip and other at-rolled metallic and non-metallic materials. Many machine parts, requiring a steel with high mechanical properties, can be made from Brake Die. Back up and support tooling, die holders, and short-run stamping and bending dies all offer opportunities to utilize the unique prehardened yet machinable characteristics of Brake Die. TYPICAL ANALYSIS Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Molybdenum (Mo) Chromium (Cr) Brake Die .48/.53 .87/1.05 .25/.35 .90/1.25 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 1" ROUND BAR TESTED ON THE DRAW OF 1200oF (649oC) Tensile Strength............................................141,000 psi Yield Strength ...............................................130,000 psi Elongation ....................................................18% Brinell Hardness ...........................................275 Rockwell C Hardness ...................................28 FLAME HARDENING Higher hardnesses at wear points may be achieved by merely heating a oxyacetylene torch long enough to heat surface to a cherry red at approximately 1,500oF. Maintain ame nozzle 1/4" from work piece. No quench required. This portion of metal will harden to a Rockwell of 54-59; due to the rapid cooling produced by the conduction of heat from the small heated area into the larger adjacent areas which have not been heat treated. Reasonable care should be taken to prevent over heating and melting.
