Name ______________________________________________________________ Date __________ Period__________ AP Human Geography 2017-18 Summer Assignment AP HUGE BINDER Please obtain one. A mid-size, three-ring binder is perfect. The required AP Human Geography (AP HUGE) summer assignments should be placed in the binder in the order they are listed. The completed binder is due the first day of school for seniors (THURSDAY, SEPT. 7) . EXPERT WITNESS Each of you will choose a country and become an “expert” on that c ountry. Throughout the year, you will complete various assignments pertaining to the country you have chosen. Countries are assigned in the order they are requested, so email your top three choices to me ASAP. I will reply and confirm what country you have been assigned. The countries you may choose from are listed below:  Algeria Argentina Australia Brazil Cameroon China Colombia Denmark Ecuador Egypt Ethiopia Finland France Germany Ghana Greece India Indonesia Iran Ireland Israel Italy Ivory Coast Japan Kazakhstan Kenya Libya Madagascar Malaysia Morocco Netherlands New Zealand Nigeria Norway Pakistan Peru Philippines Poland Portugal Romania Russia Saudi Arabia Singapore South Africa South Korea Spain Sudan Sweden Switzerland Syria Taiwan Tanzania Thailand Tunisia Turkey Uganda Ukraine Uzbekistan United Arab Emirates Venezuela Vietnam Yemen Zimbabwe Your first task is to complete the CIA World Factbook profile sheet for your country. Information can be found at (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/resources/the-world-factbook/). This will become a quick and easy reference for you over the course of the school year. Please include it in your AP HUGE binder. Next, you must choose FOUR  news stories pertaining to your country that have occurred this calendar year (January to  August, 2017) News stories should be centered on a geographic topic such as, but certainly not limited to:   Industry and Energy (production, fossil fuels, renewable energy)   Economy (jobs, trade, finance)   Politics (elections, legislation)   International Relations   Culture (food, sports, music)   Migration/Refugees   Weather, Natural Disasters   Conflict (international, civil) Remember, these are suggested topics. Nearly everything can be tied into the geography of the planet. Each theme may only be used once. Please include a copy of the article and a short summary explaining how it relates to geography and one’s location on the planet. Summaries should be about two paragraphs  (no more than 150 words). Include the article, bibliographic information and summary in your AP HUGE binder in the chronological order the article was published. MAP-AGEDDON The foundation for AP Human Geography is our planet. All of its high points and low points, hot spots and cold spots  –  every nook and cranny molds us into who we are. Most of you are probably very familiar with the four corners of the globe. It may appear somewhat juvenile, but completing the map section of the summer assignment will refortify that knowledge and maybe expose you to a place or two that were less familiar. Please follow the instructions included on the accompanying  Map Identifications  handout and include the completed maps and information sheets in your binder. You may be quizzed on these locations throughout the school year. VIRTUAL TOUR During the first few weeks of school, you will be required to present to the class an overview of the country you were assigned. This should be in the form of a Google Slideshow and will include 10 slides (no more, no less) that highlight what your country is all about. Be sure to remember the themes of geography when completing your presentation. While the presentations will take place throughout the first quarter, the deadline for the slideshow to be submitted is AUG. 31, 2017 . The order of the presentations will be determined by the order the countries are requested (first country assigned, first to present).    READ CHAPTER 1: THIS IS GEOGRAPHY You will be expected to have read Chapter 1: This is Geography. There will be a test on the chapter within the first two weeks of school. CHAPTER READING GUIDES You will receive one of these guides for each chapter of the textbook. They are very helpful in breaking down the important points of each topic and relating them to the real world. Completion of the Reading Guides is voluntary, but necessary for a better understanding of the content. The Reading Guide for Chapter 1 is included as part of the summer assignment. WISH YOU WERE HERE Hopefully, your travels this summer take you beyond the confines of your couch. Once you arrive at your destination, send me a postcard. Maybe it will be from the Jersey Shore (Blecch!). Maybe it will be from an amusement park (Cool!) or museum (Even cooler!). Or maybe it’s from the Sea of Tranquility (Best … postcard … ever!). Wherever you may be  this summer, drop a postcard in one of the fancy mailbox machines so we can see where in the world you were during the summer break. Be sure to include a cool fact or some trivia about your destination on the back of the postcard. Bonus points will be awarded for the postcard with the greatest distance traveled, shortest distance traveled, closest to the North Pole, closest to the South Pole, “ Most Awesomest ” postcard   and “Most Historical” postcard. Use PJP’s address (181 Rittenhouse Road, Royersford, PA 1 9468) and I’ll p ick them up later in the summer. Postcards must be postmarked by AUG. 31, 2017 .
