1 AS 2891.12.1—1995 Australian Standard ® Methods of sampling and testing asphaltMethod 12.1: Determination of the permanentcompressive strain characteristics of asphalt—Dynamic creep test 1 SCOPE This Standard sets out the method for determining, at standard test conditions, theaccumulated axial deformation response of asphalt mixtures normally used in pavements. Themethod may be used for cores sampled from the roadway, or for specimens compacted in thelaboratory. 2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this Standard:AS1545 Methods for the calibration and grading of extensometers2193 Method for calibration and grading of force-measuring systems of testing machines2891 Methods of sampling and testing asphalt2891.1 Method 1: Sampling of asphalt2891.2.2 Method 2.2: Sample preparation—Compaction of asphalt test specimens using agyratory compactor2891.8 Method 8: Voids and density relationships for compacted asphalt mixes2891.9.2 Method 9.2: Determination of bulk density of compacted asphalt—Presaturationmethod 3 DEFINITION For the purpose of this Standard, the definition below applies: 3.1 Accumulated strain —the accumulation of strain within a material when it is subjected tocyclic loading. 4 APPARATUS The following apparatus is required:(a) Testing machine —a pneumatic or hydraulic testing machine, capable of applying arectangular shaped load pulse through a hemispherically ended loading ram for 0.5 ± 0.05 shold time with a peak load equivalent to applied compressive stress of 200 ± 5 kPa(see Note 1), and of then removing the load and resting for a period of 1.5 ± 0.05 s beforeapplication of the next load pulse. The testing machine shall contain two circular, steel platens. One platen shall be able topivot on the hemispherical end of the loading ram, and the other platen shall be locatedcentrally on the axis of the machine. The diameters of the platens shall be greater than thediameter of the test specimen. The thickness of the platens shall be about 25 mm.The platens shall be of hardened steel, essentially smooth and free from scratches. Thefinish of the platens shall be consistent with that obtained by lapping with P600 grit siliconcarbide paper. The distance between the platens shall be adjustable over the range 40 mmto 200 mm (see Note 2).
