SAS is a software suite used in the statistical analysis of data, data access and preparation, reporting, data mining, business intelligence and analytics. As the leader in business analytics software and services, SAS helps organizations access and transform large amounts of data into insights and knowledge that can be used in the discovery of new and exciting opportunities. SAS provides its customers with the ability to manage and retrieve data from a variety of sources and to perform a myriad of statistical analyses on it. In what industries is SAS used? Certificate Program Overview UC San Diego Extension’s SAS Programming Certificate will give you the strong technical training and practical skill development that are essential for success. Geared towards professionals who seek mastery in SAS, students in this program will gain a thorough understanding of the various aspects of this powerful statistical programming language and how it can be applied to a variety of industries and professions. Developed and taught by seasoned SAS practitioners, the program includes more than 120 hours of instruction. The program concludes with a capstone project, allowing the students to demonstrate their applied knowledge through a technical paper and presentation. The SAS Programming Certificate is offered entirely online. Lectures, hand-on assignments using SAS® OnDemand, examinations, discussion boards, and expert guidance are just some of the many methods used to enhance your learning experience. SAS is used in a number of industries including: automotive, banking, capital markets, casinos, communications, consumer goods, defense and security, governments, health care providers, health insurance, high-tech, higher education, hotels, insurance, K-12 education, life sciences, manufacturing, media, oil and gas, retail, small & midsize businesses, sports, travel and transportation, and utilities. In what professional areas is SAS most commonly applied? SAS application areas include operations research, project management, quality improvement, forecasting and decision-making. The language’s flexibility is what makes it suitable for a variety of vertical applications and programming. Required Courses Recommended Course Schedule The SAS Programming Specialized Certificate is earned after the successful completion of the following six (6) courses. SAS Programming I: DATA Step and PROC Fundamentals 3 units, 30 instruction hours This course provides the tools necessary to write SAS programs to perform elementary data management, analysis, and reporting all while stressing good programming practices. The objectives are to provide the skills necessary to create and document data sets, manage and reshape data, write simple reports, and compute basic statistics on data set variables. SAS Programming II: Advanced DATA Step Programming 3 units, 30 instruction hours The course provides an in-depth theoretical aspect of how SAS DATA step processes during the DATA step compilation and execution phases. Course topics include understanding how the program data vector (PDV) works, BY-group processing, writing loops in the DATA step and array processing. PROC SQL using SAS 2 units, 20 instruction hours This course provides knowledge of the SQL procedure using SAS software and the practical skills needed to become proficient using PROC SQL. Students learn core concepts and features. 2 units, 20 instruction hours The SAS macro language is used to reduce code and facilitates passing information from one procedure to another. This course focuses on the components of the SAS macro facility and how to design, write and debug macro systems. Output Delivery System (ODS) and Data Visualization Essentials using SAS 2 units, 20 instruction hours • Hands-on comprehensive training designed to immerse the student in the skills needed to successfully get started in or advance their career SAS Programming Capstone Project • Project-based capstone course enables students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge through a technical paper formatted for potential publication at conferences such as the SAS Global Forum Quarter 1 (Fall or Spring) • SAS Programming I: Data Step and PROC Fundamentals Quarter 2 (Winter or Summer) • SAS Programming II: Advanced DATA Step Programming Quarter 3 (Fall or Spring) • PROC SQL using SAS • SAS Macro Programming • Output Delivery System (ODS) and Data Visualization Essentials using SAS * Students who enroll in a UC San Diego Extension certificate have five years to complete the program. Instructors SAS Macro Programming Certificate Benefits: • Taught by industry leaders with over 70 years of collective experience 12-Month Schedule Quarter 4 (Winter or Summer) • SAS Programming Capstone Project Numerous examples will be presented to command mastery of ODS capabilities while providing a better understanding of the statements, parameters and options to deliver desired output. Topics incorporate DATA and PROC step programming techniques. • Industry neutral curriculum allows for students to apply knowledge to their field of interest The following schedule is recommended for students who would like to complete the certificate in an accelerated timeframe. Students who choose this option would start the program in the Fall or Spring quarters.* 3 units, 30 instruction hours This mentor-lead, 9 week capstone course will give students an opportunity to demonstrate their cumulative subject knowledge of SAS programming and provide them with the skills to produce a technical paper. Students will explore a topic that allows them to delve deeply into a particular area of interest while exercising their creativity and analytical skills. Technical writing concepts and techniques will be introduced and these will be used to prepare a report which discusses the topic and associated programming concepts and methodology used in their analyses. All of our instructors are carefully screened to ensure that they bring up-to-date subject matter expertise and a passion for sharing their insights and wisdom. Art Carpenter, M.S.
