Macedoniancommunity, o its expansion duringthe late Republicand early Roman Empire nto a large and prosperous municipium, and, finally, hroughits period as a provincial apital and episcopalsee of the later Empireuntil itsabandonmentand destruction ate in the 6th century A.C. Prchistoric rtifactshave occasionally been discovered at Stobi, but to date no undisturbedprehistoricdeposit has been identified. Excavationsbefore 1970, chiefly byYugoslav and Austrianscholars,had revealeda numberof buildings,most of which date to the later phases of the city. The Stobi Project 1970-1975)hasbeen concernedwith a numberof questionsregarding he living conditionsof the people at Stobi, including the natural environment, and their socialorganization, rts, crafts,religions,and externalrelations.
