  Young people, education, and sustainable development 357  Contributor biographies  Ashton, Melanie Australia Melanie Ashton is a young independent environmental policy consultant,development specialist, and writer. She holds a Master’s in Environment and Development rom the London School o Economics and Political Sciences and aBachelor o Science, with Honours, rom the University o Melbourne. Melanie’s current clients include several Pacic Island governments, aid agencies, consulting rms, and the International Institute or Sustainable Development. Melanie has ahistory o working with the Small Island Developing States o the Pacic Region. She was the eam Leader on the Australian Government unded Persistent Organic Pollutants in Pacic Island Countries Project, which was implementedrom 2003-2008. In this role, she oversaw and managed the collection o over 100 tonnes o toxic chemicals rom Pacic countries. Melanie continues to provide consulting services directly to Pacic Island governments in the area o chemicalsmanagement and, specically, in implementing the requirements o multilateral environment agreements, including the Stockholm Convention. Melanie also provides advice to aid agencies, including the Agence Française de Développement, and consulting rms or whom she has undertaken project designs on regional initiatives to address solid and hazardous waste management in the Pacic region, as well as the design o a und or a waste-und or the region. Beirute, Nicole Jirón Costa Rica Nicole Jirón Beirute holds a Master’s degree rom the University o Costa Rica(UCR), with a concentration on social policies. She has been certied as amediator by the Costa Rican Ministry o Justice. Nicole’s work with the EarthCharter (EC) promoted the initiative or the political student movement o theUCR, expanding it through several regions in Costa Rica as part o the Costa Rican core group. Later, she became part o the International Youth Earth CharterCoalition, producing in 2001 a series o our musical concerts to promote the ECto Costa Rican youth. In subsequent years, she worked or the local government o Curridabat, Costa Rica, promoting cultural policies, participating as a socialdialogue acilitator, and developing community events. Beltram, Gordana Slovenia Gordana Beltram has worked or nature conservation since 1983. Having obtaineda degree in geography in Slovenia, she deended her Ph.D. thesis in Human Ecology, at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, on conservation and management o wetlands in Slovenia in the context o the European policy related to wetlands. During her post-graduate studies she was a researcher at the Forestry Department o the Biotechnical Faculty at University o Ljubljana. Gordana has been working at the Ministry o  the Environment and Spatial Planning o the Republic o Slovenia where she is responsible or the implementation o the Convention o Biological Diversity, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, and the World Heritage Convention in Slovenia, as well as dierent issues related to biodiversity conservation at regional or sub-regional levels. At the national level, she also works closely with protected areas and the Slovenian Ramsar sites on conservation, legal protection, managementand awareness-raising o wetlands. Gordana is particularly interested in young people’s roles in environmental communication, education, and public awareness. Bentley, Matthew Australia Matthew Bentley is a Programme Ofcer at the United Nations Environment Programme, Division o echnology, Industry, and Economics. He is responsible or activities that encourage the development o national programmes on sustainableconsumption and production (SCP) as major contributions to the United NationsMarrakech Process on SCP. Matthew has a doctorate in International Relationsand Diplomacy and worked previously at the Australian Agency or International Development in Canberra, Australia, and the Royal Melbourne Institute echnology in Melbourne, Australia. Bergmann, Iris Australia Iris Bergmann is Research Fellow at Royal Melbourne Institute o echnology  (RMI) within the Learning Cities Programme o the RMI Global Cities Institute. Tere, her work ocuses on ways in which collaboration across the civil society,government, private, and educational sectors can contribute to the sustainability  o cities and communities through lielong learning. Leila earned a doctorate in Social Sciences and Social Anthropology rom the State University o Campinas. Currently, she isan adjunct proessor at the University o Brasília. She is a researcher and teacherat the School o Education and at the Center or Sustainable Development, whereshe leads the Complexity Laboratory. She has experience in the eld o education, primarily in the ollowing areas: Brazilian culture, cultural diversity, environmental education, eld education, complexity, sustainability, environment, conservation,and sustainable development. Chawla, Louise USA Louise Chawla is a Proessor in the College o Architecture and Planning at the University o Colorado, where she is an advisor or the Children, Youth, andEnvironments Center or Research and Design and co-editor o the journal Children, Youth, and Environments . Her interest in children’s inormal learning in their communities led her to a Master’s in Education and Child Developmentrom Bryn Mawr College, ollowed by a doctorate in Environmental Psychology  rom the City University o New York. She has written widely on children andnature, children in cities, and the development o environmental activism. Her publications include the books  In the First Country o Places: Nature, Poetry and Childhood Memory (SUNY Press 1994) and the co-authored collection Growing  Up in an Urbanizing World  (UNESCO 2002). When she served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Norwegian Centre or Child Research, she revived the Growing Upin Cities project o UNESCO, which continues to involve children in cities around the world in evaluating and improving their local communities. Corcoran, Peter Blaze USA Peter Blaze Corcoran is Proessor o Environmental Studies and Environmental Education at Florida Gul Coast University, where he serves as Director o theCenter or Environmental and Sustainability Education. He has been a aculty  member at College o the Atlantic, Swarthmore College, and Bates College, and a visiting proessor in Australia, the Netherlands, and Fiji. He works extensively ininternational environmental education with a special interest in the South Pacic Island Nations. Jennier is co-ounderand Executive Director o akingIGlobal, a nonprot organisation with theaim o ostering cross-cultural dialogue, strengthening the capacity o youthas leaders, and increasing awareness and involvement in global issues through the use o technology. Jennier received her Master’s in Environmental Studies at York University in oronto, and has beenan advisor and manager o numerous capacity-building initiatives. Damen, Maayke The Netherlands Maayke Damen is the current ofcial youth delegate to the United NationsCommission on Sustainable Development. She was born at Curacao in 1986 and moved to the Netherlands at the age o two. She currently studies CulturalAnthropology/ Developmental Studies, and Political Science at Leiden University in Leiden, the Netherlands. In 2009, she will receive her Bachelor’s Degree ater nalising her thesis on sustainable development. Maayke is actively involved in  various student organisations, including CoolClimate, initiated by the Dutch Green Party. He consults on child andamily policy, and his work and ideas appear regularly in the Australian media. Hehas been publishing online since 1995. Daniel lives with his wie and two boys inCentral Victoria. Fien, John Australia John Fien is Proessor o Sustainability at the Royal Melboune Institute o  echnology (RMI) in Melbourne, Australia, and Director o the Learning Cities Programme o the RMI Global Cities Institute. He has an interdisciplinary background in teacher education, community development, natural resourcemanagement, public participation, and education or sustainable development,and is actively engaged in research on youth culture and sustainability. Johnhas completed 20 unded research projects and published over 100 papers on education, training, and capacity building or sustainability. He is the lead author and instructional designer o UNESCO’s major international training programmes on sustainable development, eaching and Learning or a Sustainable Future.He has also planned and acilitated workshops or Organisation or Economic Cooperation and Development, World Wildlie Federation, UNEP, UNESCO, and the Institute or Global Environmental Strategies in Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, Tailand, Brunei, Maldives, Philippines and South Arica. Gadotti, Moacir Brazil Moacir Gadotti has a doctorate in Educational Sciences rom the University o Geneva. He is Proessor o Philosophy o Education at the University o São Paulo and Director o the Paulo Freire Institute. He is author o many widely-read and translated books, including  Invitation to Read Paulo Freire (1988),  Historyof Pedagogical Ideas (1993),  Pedagogy of Praxis (1994),  Pedagogy of the Earth   (2001), Te Masters of Rousseau (2004), and o Educate for Another Possible World    (2007). At Paulo Freire Institute, he develops educational proposals oriented by the paradigm o sustainability.
