Retired fireman self-sacrificing DIANE POULTON Times Correspondent
Chester F. Czubala selflessly gave of himself both physically and through all his knowledge of plumbing, construction and electricity, his daughter Sandra Bigbie said. “He was very passionate about helping people and working hard,” Bigbie said. Czubala, 86, of Cedar Lake, a retired Hammond Fire Department battalion chief, also was a plumber. He belonged to both Firefighters Union Local 556 and Plumbers Union Locals 307 and 210. Czubala worked for Lassie Plumbing, which was bought by his brother and is now owned by a third generation family member. MARY M. ZUHL (nee OSENBAUGH) HIGHLAND, IN Mary M. Zuhl (nee Osenbaugh), 72, of Highland, IN passed away on July 17, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Arthur; son in law Kenny (Terri) Spriggs; children Brenda (Randy) Kellar, Ardith (Keith) Best, Carl Zuhl, Julie Zuhl, and Nora (Dave) Corder; grandchildren Stephanie Smith, Heather Zuhl, Casey Vogt, Danni Fargo, Jackie Wilson, Joshua Cassoday, Ben Kellar, Nate & Nina Corder; great grandchildren Imajin & Nolan Smith. Numerous nieces & nephews and special friends. Mary is preceded in death by her parents Richard and Beatrice Osenbaugh, sister Charlotte Kuehr, daughter Bethann (Kenny) Spriggs (nee Zuhl) and four grandchildren Charlie, KC, Brandy, and Brian Spriggs. Funeral services will be Monday, July 21, 2014 at 9:30 from the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home and at 10:00 am at Saint James the Less Catholic Church, 9640 Kennedy Avenue, Highland, IN followed by a processional to Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 pm at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 2828 Highway Ave., Highland, IN A prayer service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday with a Rosary to follow. Mary was a graduate of Bishop Noll High School and Indiana University. She was retired from the Community Health Care System. Mary was an active member of St. James the Less Catholic Church and coordinator of the Faith Enrichment Programs. She was also involved in several other religious activities. www.fagenmiller.com

WILLIAM E. AIKEN KOUTS, IN William E. Aiken, 71, of Kouts, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014. He was born in 1943 to the late William M. and Mary (Obenchain) Aiken. William is survived by his children William (Melissa) Aiken, Chad Aiken, Angela (Justin) Fulk. His grandchildren Tyler, Cody, Riley, Brody and Brooklyn. His wife Barb Aiken and her children. His sisters Barbara Evans and Norma Hough. William was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth Aiken, and wife Nancy (Leffew) Aiken. William enjoyed camping, telling jokes, and westerns. In 2009 William retired from the Porter County Highway Dept. JOEL C. AZPEITIA Joel C. Azpeitia, 65, formerly of Valparaiso IN passed away June 29,2014 after a brief illness with his family by his side. He was an amazing, incredible husband, father, son and friend and loved by all who knew him. After 42 years of service at Mittal Steel he retired to sunny Arizona with his wife and daughters. He is survived by his wife, Sonia of 41 years: three daughters: Erica (Larry Steele Jr), Adrienne (Brian McHenry) and Jessica (Kevin) Shelton; sisters: Virginia (Jesus) Aguilar, Soledad (Raul) Ruiz, Eloisa (Salvador) Rocha and Martha (Major) Seay; one brother, Antonio (Lucy) Azpeitia and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents: Vicente and Faustina Espitia; brothers: Vincente (Laura) Espitia, Marcelo (Antonia) Espitia, Josafat (Josephine) Espitia; sisters: Liduvina (Robert) Pena and Jovita Espitia. He has begun his passage to Everlasting Life with Christ. A Celebration of Life service will be held July 23, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. MST at St. Anthony of Padua in Arizona. Married to his late wife Bernice in 1952, the couple met through siblings and enjoyed dancing together. “At weddings, he would wear out my mom, then others would all be in line waiting to dance with him,” Bigbie said. “He would wear them out too. He was a great dancer especially the polka. He could dance all night long.” Czubala loved camping, taking his family on trips every year. Passionate about his church and singing, Czubala was an active member of St. Michael the Archangel National Catholic Church where he sang in the choir. In her eulogy, Czubala’s granddaughter Carrie Czubala said “ to say that he was a man who would give the shirt off his back for anyone is not quite enough as he was the man who would also give his pants, his shoes, everything in his wallet and every last bit of his physical strength to help anyone in need.”

John G. Baricevich age 82 of Lansing, IL passed away Thursday July 17, 2014; He is survived by his beloved wife Bernadine "Betty" (nee Jaranowski); loving children Debbie (Bill) Farmer, Diane (Denny) Held and Mary (Monty) Willis, adored by eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; cherishes sisters Margaret (late John) Linn, Mary (late Chuck) Crnkovich and Babe (late Lee) Buttala; numerous nieces and nephews; special cousins the Ruzich Family; preceded in death by sisters Ika (Nick) Valentich, Anna (Joseph) Tratar and brother Nick. Betty Jean Clark, age 88, of Hammond, IN passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in Cincinnati, OH. She is survived by one son, John (Janet) Clark of Milford, OH; four grandchildren: Lisa (Brian) O 'Brian of Highland, IN, Sheryl (Mark) Kozy of Munster, IN, Brent (Julie) Clark of Waynesville, OH, Staci (Dan) Meyer of West Chester, OH; 10 great grand children: Natalie, Nina, Tim, Trenton, Tanner, Lauren, Mitchell, Denham, Matthew and Elizabeth; and one brother, William Carley of Peoria, Illinois. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Orville D. Clark, parents, Samuel F. and Mildred Carley; and daughter, Gaye L. Gruhler. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Avenue, Hammond, (Hessville), IN on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Betty was born in Hammond, IN on August 22, 1925; she was a graduate of Hammond High School and went on to marry the love of her life Orville D. Clark in 1944. Betty held several different administrative positions and retired from the Vail Rubber Company. She was a beloved member of the community and donated her time frequently to those less fortunate. In her later years, moved to the Cincinnati area, resided at the New England Club, was a member of the Red Hatter's Club and was voted Queen of her Chapter for several years. SHIRLEE N. KARRA (NEE CALDWELL) HOBART, IN Shirlee N. Karras (Nee Caldwell), age 76, formally of Hobart, Indiana, passed away Sunday June 29,2014 in Hendersonville, NC. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Dee (Rick) Hackel; grandchildren: Kyle and Karee Hackel; brother, Jack (Sandy) Caldwell; brother-inlaw, Frank Ksenak and many nieces and nephews and special friends. Shirlee was preceded in death by her parents: Devere (Denny) and Virgina Caldwell; sisters: Gerrie Galanos and Janice Ksenak. Per Shirlee's request, no services were held.
