Bio:
Shaun Shahrestani is the chief harbor engineer of construction for the Port of Los Angeles, the number one container port in the United States and ranked eighth globally. In addition to record‐setting cargo operations, the Port is also home to a bustling cruise passenger complex with more than 1 million annual passengers. Appointed to his current position in August 2003, Shahrestani is responsible for the management and oversight of the Port’s Construction Division, which controls the construction and project management of numerous maritime facilities at the 7500‐acre complex. Before taking his current post, Shahrestani served as harbor engineer, chief of program management, where he focused on key Capital Improvement Projects, such as the Berth 100 terminal and Main Channel Deepening project. Shahrestani also served as program manager for the $500 million construction of the Pier 400 container terminal, which opened for business in August 2002. At a sizable 484 acres, the completion of this project made Pier 400 the largest single‐user container terminal in the world. A 28‐year City of Los Angeles employee, Shahrestani began his career at the Port in 1984 after promoting from the Department of Public Works. During his career, he has been responsible for the design and construction of several major Port development projects. Shahrestani is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Construction Management Association of American (CMAA), a past board member and membership chair of the California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference (CMANC), and past member of the Technical Council of Lifeline and Earthquake Engineering. A registered civil engineer in California since 1982, Shahrestani holds both Master and Bachelor of Science degrees in civil engineering from California State University Los Angeles.
