GM's K-12 Education Initiatives GM Works to cultivate society's awareness of the need to balance environmental, social, and economic issues. For that purpose, the company has been making contributions, both intellectual and monetary, to the education community. The company’s educational initiatives are designed to ensure the involvement of the young minds in a way to help them find workable solutions to future challenges. Supporting a strong and diverse base of education programs for children in grades kindergarden through 12 is one example of GMs’ wider educational initiatives. These programs include hands-on experiential environmental education activities, mentoring programs by GM engineers and scientists in math and science, technology curriculum dissemination dissemination to schools, and a web site created to educate children and their parents about environment, energy, and technology issues. In 2004, GM’s web site won the best education website award from the Web Marketing Association. Environment GM is dedicated to protecting human health, natural resources and the global environment. GM also recognises the impact its products and manufacturing facilities have on the environment. That is why the company is constantly improving the performance of its vehicles and the processes used to manufacture them. GM’s environmental initiatives comprises fuel economy, reduction of green house gas emissions, recycling, best practices to reduce pollution, and focus on renewable energy sources for trucks and SUVs. Promoting the use of E85 ethanol, an alternative fuel made of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline is one of GMs environmental strategies. By producing vehicles that can be powered by this fuel, GM intends to reduce vehicle emissions and dependence on petroleum, along with other  advanced technologies like hybrid power trains and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Today, GM is a leader  in producing E85 FlexFuel vehicles with more than 1.5 million of them on the road in the USA and plans to produce 400,000 more vehicles in 2006. Community Involvement By engaging in various philanthropic and community related activities, the company maintains its leadership position as a valued, responsible corporate citizen by enhancing enhancing the quality of life in the communities where the company does business. The company achieves its commitment commitment towards the community through the activities carried out by the GM Foundation and GM Corporate contributions. For example in 2004, GM and the GM Foundation contributed more than $68 million to charitable causes through cash contributions, in-kind donations and participation in charity events.
