Puzzles will be in the children’s, teen and adult areas. Come by and join the puzzle teams! pm Celebrate Sayville Library’s 100th Anniversary with an old time family carnival! Volunteers are wanted for the Sayville Library Base Ball Team playing against the New York Mutuals, using 19th century game rules. Sayville Library 100th Anniversary Programs May - 1946 – 1955 Musical Theater Workshop in Sayville Sunday, May 4, 2:00-3:00 pm Did you know Sayville had an active musical theater workshop from 1949 until 1985? Actors Troy Donahue and Brian Dennehy performed there. Join Tove Abrams for an informative presentation on an exciting part of Sayville’s history! Sayville Faculty Art Show Tell America: The Where, Why and When of the Korean War Wednesday, May 14, 3:00 pm Tell America program was started by Korean War Veterans to inform young people about the Korean War, the Forgotten War. Marine Veteran Sal Scarlotta, who served in Korea from 1952-53, will be here to put the war in context and share his experiences. News from the Friends Thanks to all who made the Yard & Collectible Sale in March a success! A second important fundraiser will be held on June 6th, the Bake Sale at the Ferry Terminal in Sayville. The variety of baked items creates an appealing array of choices for the patrons of the ferries. Sayville Library is well into its 100th Anniversary Celebration. Looking ahead to spring, the Library will be offering you a few new services and a continuation of older, popular ones, as well as new books, music and movies. Check our website for: a new link to Zinio, the online magazine service. You may now choose from over 30 magazines to download to your portable devices, wirelessly printing from your laptop. A print job may be sent from within the Library or from home. It will be waiting for you at the Print Release Station when you come to the Library to retrieve it. Museum Passes are still available, courtesy of the Friends of Sayville Library. New this year is a Pass to the Fire Island Lighthouse at Robert Moses State Park. 2014 marks the Library’s 100th Year of Service to the Sayville and West Sayville communities. Throughout the year, we are presenting informative and fun programs and displays looking back over the century. We are eagerly anticipating a Family Carnival in June and some very special programs in the fall. The big celebration will be the weekend of November 14th. Your Sayville library card is one of the best values available for the whole family. If in one month a family were to purchase four new books, four DVDs, two audiobooks and visit the LI Children’s Museum, the cost would be approximately $200. Twelve months of this type of library activity would equal $2,400 of your money saved. The more items that you borrow, library programs you attend, museums you visit, the more your library card value increases. In the third year of the tax levy cap, developing a workable operating budget was challenging. The property taxes levied by affected local governments and school districts generally cannot increase by more than 2 percent, or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower. This year the tax levy limit is 1.46%. Through careful budgeting and staff attrition, the 2014-15 Proposed Library Budget has come in under the cap. The estimated ANNUAL change for a home assessed at $40,000 is an increase of $6.16 - just 51 cents a month. This estimate is based on the current tax rates. Once the assessed valuation is set by Islip Town in the summer of 2014, the actual tax rates will be calculated. For an explanation of assessed valuation, go to this New York State website: http://www.orps.state.ny.us/home/varp_index.cfm. Stop by the Library for more details. Please note that, as has been the practice, included in the Sayville Library District line on your tax bill is the Sayville Historical Society’s tax appropriation. You will be electing one Trustee this year for a term of five-years. Remember to vote on Tuesday, May 20, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM at the Old Junior High/Suffolk Community College facility.
