Newsletter No. 172 February 2015
The Silver Prize: February 2015 Band Room News Alan & Sylvia The band sends its best wishes for a full recovery to Alan and Sylvia who are both unwell.
Butlins The Long Eaton Silver Prize Band made its annual trip to Butlins last month, with 35 of us making the pilgrimage to the bars in the sky dome. Despite not competing as a band (although five of us helped out Shirland), we comfortably outnumbered most (if not all) of the contesting bands!
Kevin Holdgate’s Trombones Against Breast Cancer Kevin’s massed (104) trombones concert at Butlins raised over £2,000 for breast cancer. Depicted below are the ten trombonists from the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band.

All members of the band are welcome. Free admission.
Lisa & Emmarrrrgggghhh Lisa and Emmarrrrgggghhh are both taking part in the Great North Run (a half-marathon) with the Huddersfield Marching Band to raise more money for Sense (The National Deafblind and Rubella Association). You can donate using the following links (or Lisa will be pleased to take your money at any rehearsal): https://www.justgiving.com/Lisa-Balsom1 https://www.justgiving.com/HMB2015EMMA
Scratch Cards The band runs a scratch card (£1 a go) every Monday (for the training band and beginners’ group) and Wednesday (for the senior band). In the past, this has provided an important source of funds to the band and we intend to use this to help pay the rent on our new band room. Whilst this is entirely voluntary; please consider having a go, if not every week, then perhaps every month. Alternatively, we have standing order forms available if you would rather contribute that way. And if you do not want to “gamble”, please just donate.
Tuck Shop Out tuck shop is now open. Please let Sharon, James, Sarah or Lesley know of any requirements.
HQ2 Works & Official Opening The toilets, electrics, new ceiling and skylights are now done and the windows are being replaced this month. We will be holding a painting party one weekend after the area. The official opening of HQ2 is provisionally arranged for Sunday 22

The Silver Prize: February 2015 Notes from the Musical Director We are now settling into our new band room(s) and are expanding again in size, with eight players starting in our beginners’ group in the last month (replacing the five players who moved up to the training band after Christmas). Thank you to Carl and James for covering rehearsals for me last week. Rehearsals are going well for the area, although we still have a lot of work to do in the coming five weeks. Our first run out of the piece is next Sunday (!) in Burton, and then we have NEMBBA two weeks after that. “Variations on Maccabeus” is a difficult piece with technical and musical challenges and no band is going to find it easy. Please ensure that you do plenty of home practice so you are all note perfect , so I can concentrate on the musical challenges in rehearsals. Maccabeus is a good test piece, which I think is enjoyable to both play and listen to, and if we put the work in now, we will be a better band after the area when start preparing our concert programmes for the rest of the year.
Five Years Ago
Derbyshire Life Sharon has been interviewed about the band by Derbyshire Life. The article is expected to be in the March edition.
Ten Years Ago
Welcome to Pete McCormick who comes out of retirement to join us on Eb Bass and to Tony Perry, who joins us on Bb Bass.
Computer Repairs James Dennis is now repairing computers and developing web sites for a consideration. If you have any work for him, please enquire at band on Mondays or Wednesdays or telephone 0115 9735776 other evenings.
