Letter Tiles Letter Tiles are a versatile, hands-on word building manipulative, ideal for introducing phonics concepts and giving children practice building every word imaginable. There are two types of word-building activities: one in which children make words by adding consonants before and after a vowel, and one in which children make words by inserting vowels between two consonants. __ a __ c __ t Through the activities, children practice letter sound correspondences as they blend sounds together to make words. LETTER TILES Each child will need a set of 37 letter tiles: 5 single-letter vowels (a, e, i, o, and u); 12 vowel pairs (ai, ea, ou, and so on); 16 consonants (all but q, v, x, y, and z) and 4 consonant digraphs (sh, th, ch, and wh). You can use plastic tiles available from the publisher or make your own using the blackline masters on pages 63 and 64. The letter tiles used for these activities are designed specifically for word building. The lettering on the tiles was carefully sized so that when words are built they look like the words children see in their reading. Each vowel pair and consonant digraph is printed on a single tile in order to encourage children to think of these letter clusters as a unit rather than as single letters. The tiles come in two colors: red letters for vowels and black letters for consonants. GETTING STARTED Copy the activity pages you intend to use, one for each child. You may want to make a transparency for the overhead projector as well, for class demonstration purposes. Also make copies of the Vowel Sounds Chart on page 62 for any children who need help remembering vowel sound correspondences. If they don’t know the sound for the ou letter tile, for example, they can look for ou on the chart and the picture will tell them the sound for ou. Hand out an activity page to each of the children and have them find the letter tiles indicated on the page. Then have them • put letter tiles on the line or lines and blend the sounds together, • decide whether the sounds form a real word, and • write any real words they build on the numbered lines. The picture at the top of the page is intended to help children get started. MAKING WORDS The list of possible words for each activity appears in the answer section of this book, pages 51-61. Not listed are words that are outside most children’s speaking and listening vocabulary. Even those that are listed include a few that may be unfamiliar to some children. Take the opportunity to help children expand their vocabularies by explaining what these words mean. This way teachers can help children to carefully and correctly enunciate each letter sound as they build the words. VOWEL PATTERNS Vowel Power introduces students to the three most common vowel patterns. • CVC Words In consonant-vowel-consonant words, the vowel sound is generally short. The word cat, for example, is a CVC word. Hundreds of words in the English language follow this pattern. • CVCe Words Here the vowel sound is generally long. The word ride, for example, follows this pattern. The common CVCe patterns are a-e, i-e, o-e, and u-e. Activities in which students add an e to the end of a CVC word (mad to made, for example) help children develop automatic recognition of this important pattern. • CVVC Words These words have a vowel pair in the middle. Because it is important for children to learn to recognize these vowel pairs as a unit, each vowel pair appears on a single tile. The goal is for children to associate a sound with each of these letter pairs. The vowel pair oa represents the long o sound, for example, and the vowel pair ou represents the sound /ou/ as in couch. Note that the vowel pairs ea and ee both represent the same sound (long e) and the vowel pair ow can represent two sounds (/ou/ and /o/ ¯ ). The goal of these activities is for children to learn regular letter sound correspondences. The letter tiles in each exploration were carefully chosen to avoid confusing children with irregularly spelled words such as put or some. ACTIVITY SEQUENCE The activity pages are presented in an order that builds from short vowels to silent e pattern to vowel pairs and includes practice pages after each new vowel pattern is introduced. First, each short vowel sound is introduced, followed by practice with all the short vowel sounds. Next, each silent e pattern is introduced, followed by practice with both CVC and CVCe words. Then, each vowel pair is introduced, followed by practice with all the vowel pairs. Finally, all the vowel patterns are included in the final set of activity pages. INVOLVING PARENTS Vowel Power activity pages are a convenient at-home activity. After introducing the activities in the classroom, you may wish to set up a routine of sending a page a week home with students to do as homework. Parents could keep a supply of letter tiles to use for the activities. They can use plastic tiles or make their own from a copy of pages 63 and 64. EXTENDING THE ACTIVITIES Here are a few ways to extend the activities in the book. They might add names of people or places. For example, for the short a pattern on page 7, students could add the words fan and cat and names such as Sam and Chad. Letter Blends Challenge students to combine letter tiles to make words with blends. For example, on page 7, students could build the word damp with the final blend mp. Vowel Power Book The children can save their activity pages in a special folder, which they can eventually staple together to form a book. They especially enjoy flipping through their books to see all the words they have made. Silly Sentences Students can use the word lists they create, plus the results of their word hunts, to make silly sentences. For example, for the short a pattern they could create a sentence such as this: Sam the Cat is mad at the bad bat. Sound Alikes When students have completed their Vowel Power Books, ask them to find the activity pages in their books that feature the same vowel sounds but different spelling patterns: ow and ou; a-e, ai, and ay; ea and ee; o-e, oa, and ow; u-e, ew, and oo.
