  Model answer for Question 2 of the IGCSE English Language paper  Read the passage entitled ‘Life on Inishmaan’ 2 By referring closely to the language used by the writer, explain how hecommunicates: ← ã the excitement of the voyage to Inishmaan ← ã the nature of the interior of the houses. (10 Marks) The main things that the narrator wishes to communicate to the reader about his journe are the pleasure of tra!elling in a small boat because of its closer connection to nature andalso the unpredictable power that the ocean holds This mood of pure happiness is set when he describes the #e$%uisite satisfaction& he feels at heading out on a more primiti!e ad!enture awa from the norms of # ci!ili'ation& The word #e$%uisite& is a superlati!e which suggests perfection( the narrator belie!es the da could not be impro!ed upon )hen the narrator describes the how the structure of the canoe #bent and %ui!ered with the wa!es& he emphasises the closer connection to the ocean that tra!elling in a canoe canafford a person( his jo seems to stem from being at one with the wa!es The rise and fall of the ocean is further emphasised with alliteration of the phrase #green* glittering wa!es& The #g& sound seems to mimic the glugging* sloshing sound of the water against the can!as canoe )ith this closer connection* howe!er* he recognises that the ocean is a  place that deser!es respect and ma+es its own rules This indi!idual power is emphasised when the narrator describes the wa!es as seeming #to toss the canoe among themsel!es& This personification of the wa!es seems to infer that the wa!es ma+e their own decisions and anbod who tra!els on them will be plaing a game where the rules are set b them ,n this ocean people* and the !essels the tra!el in* are plathings for the wa!es ,nce arri!ing at the island the narrator is struc+ b the beaut he finds in simplistic objects and also the hospitable nature of its inhabitants -e is intrigued b the fact that e!erda objects made with purel practical considerations in mind ha!e ironicall ac%uired a #natural artistic beaut& . lot of this beaut is connected with the choice of colours made b the islanders because it reminds him of an Eastern richness& / #Eastern& the narrator means .sian countries that are well +nown for their artistic abilities* especiall their use of bold primar colours li+e the red of the women&s dresses This image of the woman #clustering around the fire& also emphasises the communal nature of the inhabitants The seem to pull together and ma+e sure he is well cared for  b assigning him #a teacher and a guide& The wor+ ethic is e!ident in the listing of objects that ha!e all been crafted with #indi!idualit& The listing emphasises the amount of wor+ that needs to ta+e place for such a communit to sur!i!e In the last sentence #a natural lin+& between the inhabitants is recognised This lin+ means that the people must rel on the natural world to pro!ide them with their means of sur!i!al and ha!e therefore  built up a great respect for the en!ironment the inhabit
