A WORD FROM ANDREW... Worship as Demonstrated in Scripture Genesis 4.1-16 Here is the story that created a divide between two styles of worship. In preparation for this article, I've been reading, "Created for Worship," by Noel Due. His understanding of this example from Scripture is what I will be interacting with through the rest of this article. When contrasting Cain and Abel we see stark differences in how they worship and how this pleases or displeases God. First, let's observe Abel. We'll start with God's response to Abel's worship. Verse four, from chapter four of Genesis, says that God not only accepted Abel's worship, but Abel himself. Hebrews 11:4 calls Abel's offering an offering given in faith. It seems clear, in this instance, that God is not focused on the offering, but the person who offered the worship. Abel pleased God, in contrast to his brother. Cain was not accepted by God, nor was his offering. Noel Due offers this explanation, "For

those who worship according to the line of Cain, worship is a means to an end - the end being one's own blessing, the means being on one's own terms" (p50). That's where I stopped reading, in order to catch my mind up with my eyes. When I hear worship style, I used to think, "guitar or organ; praise songs or hymns." I'm just being honest. I derive my definition of that phrase from years of hearing churches speak of worship styles, and studying many pragmatic approaches to worship while in Seminary. Noel Due absolutely shifted my foundation. The issue isn't the generic style of our worship. It is the style in which we worship. If we are focused on ourselves in worship, God will not accept that worship. This isn't, and has never been an issue in my years as a worship pastor, but I find comfort and affirmation in these verses. Our drive in worship... is worship. Our prayer, in preparation for worship, must be that we set aside our own comforts for the glory of God. While edification plays a major role in our congregational worship, it cannot be our goal. Our goal must continually and pervasively be honoring a Creator God who gave his Son to cleanse us of our unrighteous selves. CRC Closings: In the event of inclement weather, such as snow or ice, the CRC may be closed, open late, or close early. This is to ensure the safety of CRC members and staff. It’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Time February 1-8 Peanut butter is a staple in most homes especially where children live. Second Harvest puts jars of peanut butter in the food boxes given to individuals and families in need. This is a healthy source of protein and of course jelly is always a treat. Please put jars of either or both and place them in the designated box located in the collection area across from the elevator. You may also donate money so that Second Harvest can purchase the items by the case. Collection Dates:
