Dear Lee: I have a mixed response to your resignation. You are the heart and soul of On Eagle’s Wings. It was your experience and your dream that made it possible. You had the dream. You shared the dream. You asked for help. You showed the way. You fly the plane. You visit the people who are the object of our ministry. You raise the funds. You know supporters from pole to pole. Your presentations in sermon, conversation and otherwise have captured the imagination of hundreds. And you’ve brought the board along, made us a part, shared that dream. Your leaving is a giant shift for all of us who are part of On Eagles Wings. However, I also rejoice with you in your decision to retire. You know it is time for you to shift the focus of your life, to give more time for Lee and Sarah together. Dear Members of the On Eagles Wings Boards, It is with many mixed emotions that I am writing to notify you that I will be retiring from my position as On Eagles Wings Executive Director, effective June 30, 2008. Thank you for the life changing opportunity you have given me to help create and establish On Eagles Wings as a faithful and effective tool for ministry. The people of the North and everyone in the On Eagles Wings family have touched me in ways that will provide a lifetime of wonderful memories. It has been a privilege to be a part of such a nurturing, diverse and faithful ministry family. From our first days of dreaming and planning, God has been present to make a way and to guide and sustain us with His love. I pray that the staff, members of the boards, volunteers, donors and most importantly, the people of the North will feel God’s peace and presence as He continues to make a way and lead On Eagles Wings in the days ahead. Thank you, my friends, for the privilege of walking with you. I have been truly blessed. Dear Lee: As President of the U.S. Board, I acknowledge your letter of resignation/ retirement as Executive Director. I, too, write this letter with mixed emotions, and, speaking for past and present Board members, it is with both sadness and joy that we accept your letter. From its inception, you have guided On Eagleʼs Wings on a journey few of us could have imagined. Your dream became our dream, and with Godʼs rich blessings, so many others have come to know the peoples of the North and the many amazing ways they can be touched and served through this ministry. You have prepared us for the transition. For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven… Ecclesiastes 3:1 I think there is also a time to hold on and a time to let go. After many quiet moments of prayer and reflection I have discovered that it is time for me to let go and retire from my position as Executive Director of On Eagle’s Wings. It is time to shift the focus of my life. As my son was growing up I had a difficult time thinking about the day when he would become an adult and leave home to find his own way in the world. Selfishly, I wanted him to stay. It felt safe. It felt secure. It felt like home. As he grew and became a caring responsible young man, I slowly began to realize that I needed to let go so that he could become all that God was leading him to be. I can still feel my tears as he hugged Sarah and me and left home to find his way. He is a good man. I feel those tears again as I let go of On Eagle’s Wings so it can find its way and become everything God is leading it to be. They are sad tears but good tears. God has blessed On Eagle’s Wings in ways that I never imagined when a small group of Canadians and Americans from many cultures and denominations met to dream, share a vision and plan ways to create a new ministry. From that first day God has made a way. I have learned a lot. A First Nations chief from the Northwest Territories spoke about the survival of aboriginal people in one of the harshest climates in the world. He said, “We are strong like two people.” That’s an important lesson to learn. We never accomplish anything alone. The history and future of On Eagle’s Wings is not my history or my future. It is our history. We are staff, northern and southern Christians, board members, volunteers, those who serve and those who make our serving possible. AnnE Zimmerman is a great gift of God to On Eagle’s Wings. As she becomes the new Executive Ecumenism in the North is not so much a question of meetings and discussions but rather a question of doing things together. The members of On Eagles Wings have given the Catholic Church a wonderful opportunity to practice ecumenism. The missionary spirit of On Eagles Wings is the fuel that helps many lamps to burn a bit more brightly in the dark night of our northern society. Respectful of Catholic theology, and inviting and encouraging local cooperation, they have shared the Good News of Christ with hundreds of children who responded in kind. 2 Toll Free: 1-866-441-6594 Director, it will be our future as northern and southern Christians continue to pray, to dream, to work and serve together. The people of the North and everyone in the On Eagle’s Wings family have touched my life in ways that will provide a lifetime of wonderful memories. It has been a privilege to dream together, to create, to build, to break down the walls between cultures and denominations, and to discover what God’s people can do when they are joined together, strong like two people. Thank you for inviting me into your homes, sharing our lives, our stories and our journey as the On Eagle’s Wings family. I look forward to the days ahead and sharing a new and different role in the On Eagle’s Wings family. Sarah and I look forward to being On Eagle’s Wings volunteers. It will be a privilege to serve as a volunteer pilot during Summer Bible School and to renew friendships with northern people and other On Eagle’s Wings volunteers. I look forward to visiting churches to tell others about our ministry and to invite them to join Sarah me in supporting On Eagle’s Wings with our prayers and financial gifts. I have two plaques on my office wall. One says “Imagine” and the other says “Dream.” They are important words for me. Imagine, picture in your mind the world and the lives of God’s people if we pray, walk, work and serve together. I pray that AnnE, our staff, members of the boards, volunteers, donors and most importantly, the people of the North will feel God’s peace and presence as he continues to make a way and lead On Eagle’s Wings. Masi Cho, Thank You, My Friends, At the center of that “miracle of love” there is a man whose heart beats at the rhythm of the North. Lutheran Pastor-pilot Lee Berry, founder, has been the driving force that keeps On Eagles Wings in full flight. For years he has shown intelligence, determination, generosity and vision. He has been and will remain a true friend of our northern missions. At the pulpit, his love for On Eagles Wings and its missionary work inspires, convinces and makes people dream dreams. At the control of his plane, he delivers on what he had promised. The Good News is preached to the poor. The Catholic Church of the Mackenzie Diocese is very grateful to all the members of On Eagles Wings who in the course of the years have been part of our missionary team. We also are proud to have such partners working in the same mission field. My friend asked me a very good question. “Why did you say yes?” The question was regarding an official Call to Ministry received from both the On Eagle’s Wings U.S. Board of Trustees and the Canadian Board. The call was for my continuation with On Eagle’s Wings but, now as the Executive Director. Why would I say yes? How could I even think of continuing the dream of a founder? I reflected. The boards were waiting for a response. I prayed. I consulted with mentors. In that reflection, prayer and conversation I began to consider God’s role in all of this. To say ‘yes’ would acknowledge what God has already done. God has blessed On Eagle’s Wings to share the love of Christ and ‘walk with’ the people of the North, to ‘walk with’ prayer and financial supporters, to ‘walk’ until two planes were given so we could ‘fly’ and to ‘walk with’ many as they learned to ‘walk with’ others. Respect between cultures and denominations grew. Relationships flourished. God gave a permanent home to On Eagle’s Wings. We learned to speak with integrity. We learned to be open and honest. Because of what God did in the hearts of Lee, supporters, boards, northerners and southerners, ministry staff and denominations – the dream became a reality. partnership. With thanks, we will draw from the gifts entrusted to us to continue. Why do I say yes? I say ‘yes’ because I embrace the dream. With Catholics, Anglicans and Lutherans, aboriginal and non-aboriginal people, I hold to the reality and task of working together as God leads. The foundation is here. We have ‘walked together’. God has not failed us. God may not answer all our concerns or give quick responses to our challenges but God will be there. Thank you for your willingness to step forward with me and see what God still intends to do. With God’s support and yours, I humbly and with great excitement accept the call to serve with you as the Executive Director. To say ‘yes’ to this call would recognize that God already is in the life of On Eagle’s Wings. This ministry life is where God is using many people’s gifts and God uses mine. God is already here and we can realize that is true. God will not leave us. Because God is here, I am encouraged to respond to the collaboration of many voices to further the dream. To say ‘yes’ would say ‘yes’ to where God is already leading. I have begun the search for a candidate to fill the ministry staff position in the Yellowknife base to serve the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Sitting in a small northern community church, I listened for a knock. There was none. I assumed the individual at the door was a local man. Knocking was my southern custom. It was not the aboriginal custom in this village. A strong trust was between the people. Doors are unlocked unless an individual is traveling. Everyone is welcome as a family member. I, however, had locked the door. I had pushed the lock in on the door handle without even thinking – it was my habit. I rushed to the door hoping the person had not left. As I opened the door, I noted the back of a man as he walked down the front step. As he heard the door open, he turned. “Oh, I thought you must not be here.” He offered his hand in greeting and told me his first name - Fred. I told him mine. He stood in silence. Following his lead, I did as well. I waited. We both stood looking toward the frozen river. I considered what his reason for coming to see me might be. Sensing my own unease in the silence, I asked, “Is there something I can do?” He did not speak. I was learning to wait. Finally, he turned and looked straight at me. I assumed he was considering whether to tell me the reason he had come. “I am here to ask, would you pray for me?” I invited him in – he said, “No, just pray.” Safety First The day began like any other for Pastor Lesley Hand and volunteer pilot Garth Muddle as they brushed off the frost, took off the engine and wing covers and disconnected the engine heaters in the On Eagle’s Wings airplane. It had been a good visit. People were happy to see Lesley and Garth. It was a beautiful clear and cold December afternoon as they took off from the northern community, headed for the On Eagle’s Wings base in Fort McMurray. On their way they stopped to visit people in a small village. It was just before dark when they left that village. There are no runway lights on the snow covered airstrip and Northern weather is unpredictable. As they flew into the winter darkness, the beautiful weather suddenly changed to low cloud and heavy snow. A check of the weather in Fort McMurray told Garth that he would have to land using the airplane’s instruments in the blowing snow and low visibility. As they got closer to their destination, ice started to build up on the wings of the Piper Aztec. For inexperienced pilots and less well-equipped airplanes, that would mean turning back 4 Toll Free: 1-866-441-6594 FROM THE NORTH We stood in silence a little longer. He then began to speak of his homesickness. He had been away from his home and family for quite a few years and had left in anger. Since leaving, life had not turned out as he quite imagined. He wanted to go home but was unsure. Unsure whether his family would be pleased, unsure how he really felt about it all, yet he did know he was craving home. Finally, he just looked at me and gave a meek smile. I reached out my hands. He took them. We bowed our heads and prayed. “Amen.” He lifted his head and smiled again. He began to turn to leave. Then, he turned back. Softly he said, “May I do something for you?” “Pray for me.” He nodded his head and walked away. Where he was going, I do not know. Home, I hope. I do think of Fred often and wonder if we will see each other again. God heard our prayers. Fred and I ‘walked together’ as children of God. Two people from very different cultures, on a step of a tiny northern church, stopped and cared for each other. and waiting for the weather to clear. But Garth, Lesley and the well-equipped On Eagle’s Wings airplane continued on, confidently and safely. All On Eagle’s Wings pilots are trained for flying in changeable northern weather. When Garth landed, he remarked, “The Aztec is a great airplane!” On Eagle’s Wings pilots have almost 65,000 hours of experience flying in the northern “bush.” For our pilots and our staff, safety is always first. We thank God for the excellent airplanes and the skills and commitment of our On Eagle’s Wings pilots who safely carry people and the gospel to God’s people in remote northern communities.. Website: www.oneagleswings.org Northern Connections Meet the people of Red Hill Lutheran Church, Tustin, California Just a few miles from Disneyland, in the warm sunshine of southern California, Red Hill Lutheran Church is about as far removed from northern Canada and the ministry of On Eagle’s Wings as you can get. But the people of this large suburban congregation of almost 2000 and On Eagle’s Wings are good friends and important parts of each other’s ministry family. Volunteers from Red Hill have come to the North to teach Summer Bible School and volunteer in northern communities. In addition to congregational support, their Sunday School and the Red Hill Lutheran Church Christian School also support the ministry of On Eagle’s Wings. We thank God for the wonderful partnership of Red Hill Lutheran Church and On Eagle’s Wings -- praying, working, supporting and serving together. St. David’s Anglican Mission, Ft. Simpson, Northwest Territories Regular support for On Eagle’s Wings comes from northern Canada as well. One such congregation is St. David’s Anglican Mission in Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. Nestled on the bank of the Mackenzie River, this mission of less than 50 people has provided spiritual care since the 1800s. During a church service where a handful of church members gathered, a small boy walked to the front of the sanctuary. Ceremoniously, he handed over a red pouch full of nickels, pennies and dimes to a visiting Summer Bible School teacher. “This is so the On Eagle’s Wings plane will come back.” St. David’s is continuing the generosity expressed in that gift. To acknowledge what God is doing, a ‘thank offering’ is sent regularly to On Eagle’s Wings. We are thankful for the generous, consistent prayers and support of St. David’s Anglican Mission. Lesley Hand Pastor, Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan LESLEY’S STORIES “SATURDAY SOAKERS” IN FT. CHIPEWYAN On Saturday afternoons, the community hall in Fort Chipewyan echoes with the sound of young voices as children straggle in for Bible stories, games, crafts and music. “Saturday Soakers” may be an unlikely name for a Bible Club, but that doesn’t deter the 20 plus children who come for the activities and to get to know Jesus – some for the first time. The ‘regulars’ have learned that this is a safe place where they are loved and have fun. Others come because they have seen the posters, or they come with a friend, or perhaps they are just curious. ”Saturday Soakers is about reaching out to community children, being with them, and doing something wonderful for them,” explains Rev. Marjorie Glanfield. Along with other local leaders, Missie and Gracie, and the On Eagle’s Wings’ ministry staff, Rev. Marjorie leads each day’s program. Their dream is that Saturday Soakers will grow into a monthly Bible Club led by local adults from different churches in the community. This dream began when local leaders decided that “we need more than Summer Bible School. Our children need to know the Christmas story, the Easter story – and everything in between.” The journey began with Christmas and Easter mini-Bible Schools led by On Eagle’s Wings’ staff and volunteers. The children learned quickly and eagerly and asked, “Why can’t we do this every month?” Leaders decided to try a shift from occasional Bible Schools led by volunteers to an ongoing year-round Bible Club program led by local people. Saturday Soakers piloted the new On Eagle’s Wings’ GIGGLE Sunday School curriculum – ”A Promise is Coming” (Advent) and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” – and discovered that children are not the only learners. As they assumed more of the leadership, local adults discovered their own skills and gifts, and Saturday Soakers offers them a venue to pass on their faith to their children. Saturday Soakers is a small afternoon Bible Club with a big dream … and so much more! It is a catalyst for building relationships both within Fort Chipewyan and between locals and southern volunteers and resources. Those relationships offer possibilities for new strands of ministry and growth – outreach to the children’s families, outreach to seniors, healing ministry, or an invitation to others to come, see, and be involved in what God is doing in the lives of the children. 500 New Horses for Pastor Lesley! The On Eagle’s Wings airplane, Piper Aztec C-GEHH, that Pastor Lesley Hand and our volunteer pilots use for ministry in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan will soon be getting 500 new horses – horsepower, that is. Aircraft engines must be overhauled after 2000 hours of flying, and even though the engines are still running well, we want to ensure that they are always in excellent condition for the demanding conditions of northern flying. Thanks to a generous $60,000 donation from a good friend of On Eagle’s Wings, the two engines on C-GEHH, each of which provides 250 horsepower, are being overhauled. When the overhauls are complete, C-GEHH will have the power of 500 fresh horses to provide safe and reliable transportation for On Eagle’s Wings staff and volunteers. We thank God for the prayers and generous financial gift of our friend.
