Sony HVR-MRC1 with Canon XH-A1 revised 9/20/11 When Checking XH-A1 Kit Out From the Media Center 1. Make sure there’s a 6-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable included. If you don’t have a 6-pin to 9-pin Firewire cable to connect the CF recorder to a computer, check one of those out as well. 2. Make sure to get two batteries: one Sony (for the CF Recorder) and one Canon (for the XH-A1). Physical Connections 1. Attach Sony CF recorder on horse shoe mount on camera top. HDV/DV PORT 2. Put a tape in the camera--the CF recorder will not record without it! 3. Make sure there’s a CF card in the CF recorder. 4. Connect CF recorder to the XH-A1 via HDV/DV port on the back of the XH-A1. 5. Power on the XH-A1 camera. Leave the CF recorder off. Settings - XH-A1 First, make sure that the camera is in Tape mode and not CF card mode via the switch just above and behind the record button. 1. Press the MENU button again, go to SYSTEM SETUP, then select RESET ALL and YES at the prompt. 2. Press the MENU button (in the back left corner of the camera), go to SETUP, then choose HD or SD16:9 or SD4:3. SIGNAL 3. Press MENU button and go to SYSTEM SETUP again. Set DV CONTROL to ON--you will see the letters DV plus a zigzag arrow. 4. Turn off the XH-A1--this is important! Turn on the CF Recorder. Settings - Sony CF Recorder Use the fast-forward/rewind buttons to move through the menu and the Play/”EXEC” button to make selections. (1) Settings - Sony CF Recorder 1. Format and reset CF Recorder: press the MENU button, select DELETE, then FORMAT then OK. Press the MENU button again and select ALL RESET then OK. 2. Press MENU again, go to SETTING. If you’re shooting NTSC (non-HD) footage, go to DV FILETYPE and choose RAW DV. (*If you’re shooting HDV, DV FILETYPE is irrelevant) 3. Press MENU again and go to SETTING, then go to CAMLINK SEL and choose SYNCHRO. 4. Make sure that CAM LINK is on. There should be a zigzag arrow symbol on the front display of the CF recorder. If it’s off press the CAM LINK button until the symbol appears. 5. Turn on the XH-A1. Press MENU on the CF recorder--if you see a CF icon with dashes connecting it to a computer-shaped icon, press the MENU button on the CF recorder to advance past this screen. Record 1. Record by pressing the record button on the XH-A1. It will take a CAM LINK SYMBOL few seconds for the CF recorder to actually begin recording--make sure to give each shot 10 seconds of pre-roll. 2. When finished with all your shooting power down the CF recorder before disconnecting it from the XH-A1. Dumping/Transcoding Footage *if you shot SD-DV footage and set the CF recorder to record RAW DV (above) your files should appear as Quicktime files and you can start editing with them right away. If you show HD, continue... 1. Connect the CF recorder to a computer. Your HD files will appear as .M2T’s. 2. Open MPEG STREAMCLIP. 3. From MPEG STREAMCLIP LIST MENU select BATCH LIST, Click ADD FILES and navigate to the footage you shot. (2) 6. In the Movie Exporter window that appears next, select Apple ProRes 422. Move the Quality slider to 100% and uncheck the INTERLACED SCALING box. 7. Click “TO BATCH”, then start the Batch processing job via the “GO” button in the Batch List window.
