N E W S L E T T E R KINDERGARTEN Room 138 DECEMBER 2013 MR.NICOL AND MRS. GALLO z Tis the Season z We would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas! You hope that you each have a blessed holiday and enjoy the time spent with family and friends. COMING UP IN DECEMBER Elf on the Shelf Starting Monday, December 2nd, a friendly elf will be visiting daily to watch over us and report back to Santa. If you have not heard of ‘Elf on the Shelf’, please visit our classroom website for more information or www.elfontheshelf.com December will be a very busy month in Kindergarten! Our students will be busy little elves, preparing for our Christmas Concert, learning about Advent, attending a musical concert at Jean Vanier, making Christmas crafts and so much more! This month we will begin working on our letters to Santa. Santa has promised to respond to each child’s letter, which will hopefully be in the last week of school. In Science, the students have already begun to wonder about and explore the concept of states of matter. They have been participating in experiments to see what happens to water at different temperatures. Important Note We are continuously humbled and blessed by the thoughtfulness of our students and their families at Christmas time. We truly appreciate being thought of at this busy time of year. Although we by no means expect anything for Christmas, we would like to ask that if you would like to give us anything, that it be something for the students. Seeing the students For math, we will be reviewing everything we have learned this year in our ‘Math Mania!!!’ This month we are introducing ‘The Adventures of Sock Monkey.’ Each weekend students will take home our class Sock Monkey to spend time with. Students will write, draw or take pictures of their time together and share it with the class the following week. The Sock Monkey is a great way to get students writing about the events in their live and sharing these events with Sock Monkey orally. Please check out our website to find out more details. happy is what makes us happy! So, if there is an item and/or toy that you know your own child loves, I’m sure their peers would enjoy it in the classroom as well (for example; craft supplies, educational games, teaching supplies etc.). Thank DEC 5TH School Mass held in the gymnasium 9:00 am PJ Day DEC 10th This season we will be reading the Polar Express, written by Chris Van Allsburg. On Thursday, December 19th, we will be climbing aboard our very own Polar Express (created by the students) to watch the movie in our PJ’s. Please send your child to school in a warm pair of pajamas for the day! We are looking for a donation of Daytime Christmas Concert 1:30pm DEC 11TH Musical Concert at JVA/Christmas Concert 6:00pm Hot Chocolate, as we will be following the events in the movie. Elf on the Shelf! The Elf on the Shelf is a special scout elf sent from the North Pole to help Santa Claus manage his naughty and nice lists. When a class/ family adopts an elf and gives it a name, the elf DEC 17TH Business Fair. Event held by the grade 8’s receives its Christmas magic and can fly to the North Pole each night to tell Santa Claus about all of the day's adventures. Each morning, the elf returns to its Class/family and perches in a different place to watch the fun. Field Trip to Jean Vainer On Wednesday, December 11th our class will be taking a field trip to Jean Vainer DEC 19TH PJ Day All aboard the Polar Express! to watch a musical play performed by the high school students. Christmas Concert St. Mary’s will have two opportunities for parents to watch our Christmas Concert. The first will be held on Tuesday, Dec 10th @1:30. The second concert will be held on Wednesday Dec 11th @ 6:00pm. Details to follow. November Review PenPals During the month of November we received our first letter from our PenPals in Korea. They shared with us some of their traditions, what they are learning in class and asked us questions about what it’s like to live in Canada. information about ourselves and others. We used bar graphs, tallies and pictographs to collect the data. Our students are really starting to talk like mathematicians, using words like; data, In math we learned attributes, surveys, about collecting data to greater and less then. to discover new Math Parent Interview Thank you to everyone for coming to see us during parent interview.
